Minutes of EMCC Luncheon Meeting 3/1/2012
The meeting was called to order by President Bob Brittain at 11:50 am. Board members present were Barbara Ormand, Diane Shoudt, Bob Brittain, Bill Herman, Kara Schug and Wayne Clay.
Absent was Loretta Olson.
There was no New Member presentation.
Guest speaker was Bobby Richardson, representing the Sandia Lions Club. Bobby believes it is a privilege to serve the underprivileged. The Lions Club helps develop community leaders and at meetings they vote as to where to spend money. There are 45,000 Lions Clubs all over
the world and 1.3 million members. Bobby handed out the objectives of the Lions Club and their code of ethics. He invited everyone to attend a meeting, the next one to be held March 6th.
Guest speaker was Stan Schug, Kara’s husband, who is a Botanist, Horticulturist and certified arborist with the Albuquerque Bio Park for the past 11 years. The Bio Park includes the zoo, Tingley beach, Botanic gardens & aquarium and the Japanese garden to the north of the botanic gardens. Stan gave many tips including never top a tree but rather adjust from the canopy and cut 1 limb at a time. There are 3 types of Junipers and they start to bloom in
February which causes many people trouble with allergies. The best way to protect your trees
from beetles and other insects is to water them. Insecticides kill everything. The best time to
prune trees is in the winter and do not prune the older trees as much. Never remove more than
1/3 of the canopy. To improve soil, use organic matter. For questions you can call 311 and that
will connect you with the Bernalillo County Extension Services.
Bill Herman gave the Treasurers report. At the first of February we had $8436.86 in the bank
and at the end of the month there was $8610.08, with a net income of $173.22.
President Bob announced the Spring Fling which will be a Hoe Down at the Copper Queen
located on the Founders Ranch owned by SASS. The date is April 28th from 6:00 to 9:30 pm.
There will be music for dancing, food and beverages. Tickets are $30 per person or $50 per
couple. Tickets will be available at next month’s meeting and the Chamber office on Monday
and Friday afternoons.
The Member of the Month is RE/MAX Pros.
Ellen Ashcraft from Mary Kay donated a gift for a drawing which was won by Member Susie
Bob reminded everyone of the Tijeras town meetings and all are welcome to attend.
The meeting was adjourned at 1pm and the board meeting to follow.
