The Guest Speaker was Craig Springer. Although Craig resides in Edgewood, his parents owned a historical house in Hillsboro, NM that was built by Nicholas Galles in the 1880’s and now owned by Springer and his wife. He is a historian who has researched much of the history of that area and wrote a book titled “Murder on the White Sands” about the Fountain murders. The book is a fundraiser and sells for $20.00. The topic of the speach was “The Apache Wars, Murder and Mining in Hillsboro, NM” and he showed a series of slides coinciding with the story. Hillsboro was founded in 1877 and was the county seat of Sierra County. The county courthouse was built in 1892 and although it was torn down, there are still remnants of the building that can be seen. His story told of the battles between the black soldiers, called Buffalo Soldiers, and the Apache’s led by Chief Victorio, who was the great, great grandfather of EMCC member, Linda Eaglefeather.
