East Mountain Chamber of Commerce
June 6, 2013
June Meeting was held at the Los Vecinos Community Center in Tijeras. Board members present were Bob Brittain, Wayne Clay, Bill Herman, Kara Schug, Sarah Edgell, Regina Marnett, Jose Madera, Liz Morantes, Barbara Ormand, and Julie Albright, Director
Meeting was called to order at11:45 am by President Bob Brittain. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and Board Members and Chamber Members gave their introductions.
New member presentations were given by George Glover from Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and School in Cedar Crest, and Rosie Harmon from Coldwell Banker Legacy in Cedar Crest.
Guest speakers were - Karen Takai and Jon Helmich from the East Mountain Interagency Fire Protection Association (EMIFPA). EMIFPA has been in operation since 1989 in the East Mountains as a fire protection agency/information organization. Fire danger is extremely high this year as New Mexico is in the third year of a serious drought. The Sandia Mountains have not had a major fire for a century. Defensible space around residences needs to be a priority for all East Mountain in habitants. Forest Ranger Cid Morgan talked about ongoing forest programs for cutting and thinning forest areas in the East Mountains. A Pre-Incident Check List for fire preparation and an East Mountain Emergency Telephone magnet was given to all present. Gerry Jones from the Sandia Lions club presented a $500 check to EMIFPA to help offset costs of producing the magnet.
Rachel Donovan presented a report about the May 18 Chamber Scavenger Hunt. Thirty local businesses participated and seven businesses became new chamber members. The event created awareness in the community and feedback from 20 surveys indicated 19 participants visited area businesses for the first time. If the Chamber repeats the event in the future, we may want to add an additional hour and find a weekend not so full of other events.
