Speaker #1: Leota Harriman, owner of The Independent Newspaper presented the question “How do you get your news into the paper?”
She handed out a guide for press releases to use as a template when sending in articles. Whether they can use the article depends on many things but most importantly are space and what makes this article of interest to the community?
The press release guide can be completed and either emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or faxed to 286-6119.
Speaker #2: Floyd DeGrodt, CPA. He has been a CPA for 23 years and is an East Mountain resident. He offers accounting and bookkeeping services. He also helps with IRS letter resolutions. He advised if you get a letter from the IRS to call him right away. He also discussed the website for the IRS which is www.irs.gov. Lastly he discussed common IRS tax scams and what to know to avoid them. All IRS correspondence begins by mail not by email or phone.
Speaker #3: John Helmich, East Mountain Interagency Fire Protection Association (EMIFPA)
John gave an update on the Dog Head Fire.
Total acres burned = 17,912
Fire is 98% Contained/2% Control Line
Actual number of homes lost was decreased to 12
Actual number of other buildings lost was increased to 44
The Cause of the fire was a thinning tool being used by Contract Workers for the Forest Service.
Emergency rehabilitation to re-seed the area and do erosion control has already began
Treasurer’s Report: After income and expenses for the month, the approximate balance in the account is $8300.00

Announcement by Nancy Carpenter of the Summer Networking event to honor First Responders which will be held at the James McGrane Jr. Public Safety Complex from 5 – 7 P.M. on August 27th.
Announcement by Mary Dammann and Barbara Ormond about the Run Rally and Rock annual event that will be held this year on August 6th in Edgewood, NM. There will be games, food, door prizes, music, parade and fireworks. (Yes John, the flyer does say fireworks!)
Realtor Packets: Packets were prepared by One Stop Office and ready for pick up. Relocation and Member packets are still being prepared.
