    EM Residents,

We apologize in advance for the length of this post. There are several topics that we feel are important and that we need to inform you about.

This morning, the National Weather Service (NOAA) issued a "fire weather watch" for the EM region and areas to our east for Monday, October 17th. It is predicted to endure from late morning until early evening. We have not had to discuss the meaning of this since spring, so it is appropriate to remind everyone of what this means.

A "fire weather watch" is equivalent to the "red flag" warning. The only difference is that a watch is issued when the level of confidence in this forecast is at approximately a 50% chance of actually occurring. The "red flag" warning is issued when the NWS has a very high level of confidence in their forecast taking place. Since these conditions are very dangerous, NWS prefers to error on the side of caution when they issue them.

Here is an explanation of why these forecasts are made.  "Fire weather watch" and "red flag" warnings: these forecasts are made when temperatures are above average (or normal) for that time of year, relative humidity is very low, and wind speeds are elevated (usually steady in the 20-30 mph range, with gusts well above that). These conditions can occur at any Fire Danger level. Currently we are at the "moderate" fire danger level in our region.

What is a "red flag" warning? Here is the definition: "A "red flag" warning is a short term, temporary warning indicating the presence of dangerous combinations of temperature, wind, relative humidity, fuel or drought conditions which can contribute to new fires or rapid spread of existing fires. They can be issued at any Fire Danger level."

EMIFPA encourages you to follow this advice during "red flag" conditions: no campfires, no smoking outside, and no welding until NWS (NOAA) lifts the warning.

Finally, the Sandia Ranger District has completed the prescribed burn in Units 1 and 2 of the Sulphur PG fuels reduction project. Residual smoke will be visible over the next days. Be assured that crews will be patrolling and monitoring the area. EMIFPA posted a picture of the area taken this morning. It can be seen at our Facebook page, linked here:

    https://www.facebook.com/East-Mountain-Interagency-Fire-Protection-Association-EMIFPA-328452040510310/

Pictures of the Sulphur PG prescribed burn can also be found on the Cibola NF Facebook page, linked here: https://www.facebook.com/cibolanf/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel.

DO NOT call 911 to report smoke from the prescribed burn. Personnel are well aware of the smoke. Please keep the 911 hotline open for emergencies. Sandia Ranger District fire personnel will be monitoring this area over the next few days. Expect to see smoke for several days, but all smoke will be from interior areas and pose no threat to the surrounding area.

    EM Residents,

Ignition on the Sulphur PG prescribed burn has been stopped. Units 1 and 2 of this prescribed burn were completed. Unit 3 was not started, and opportunities for a fuels reduction prescribed burn on this unit will be looked into over the next months. All objectives in units 1 and 2 were reached, and no more ignition is planned in this area at this time. Please go to the Cibola NF Facebook page for maps of the prescribed burn area, as well as photos from today. We have posted one new photo to the EMIFPA Facebook page. The link follows:

    EM Residents,

The second day of the planned 3 day prescribed burn in the Sulphur PG area has been started. The high relative humidity and low overnight temperatures in the area are slowing good progress in the burn plans in the second block of the burn. We will post updates during the day and provide new pictures on our EMIFPA Facebook page. The link to that is below.

    EM Residents,

The Sulphur PG prescribed burn is going well. High RH (relative humidity) and low temperatures have moderated fire behavior, but good progress continues to be made on the burn. Potentially ignition will be stopped early. Smoke impact of the area will determine if this happens.

Here is the link to the EMIFPA Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/East-Mountain-Interagency-Fire-Protection-Association-EMIFPA-328452040510310/. A new picture has been posted from 12 noon.

The Cibola NF Facebook page is linked here: https://www.facebook.com/cibolanf/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel. They have posted "inside the fire" pictures that are very informative of burn conditions and progress.

The Sandia District crews are conducting this burn. DO NOT call 911 to report this smoke. Fire crews are on hand and actively conducting this prescribed burn.

    EM Residents,

Ignitions were stopped at approximately 2 pm today. Fire crews will continue to patrol and monitor the burn. Smoke can be expected over the next hours and days, but be assured that personnel will be on hand to deal with any situation. At this time plans still project tomorrow (Friday) as the final day for this prescribed burn. We will announce this decision tomorrow.

    EM Residents,

The crews conducting the Sulphur Picnic Ground prescribed burn stopped ignition at approximately 1 pm this afternoon. Crews had planned to ignite approximately 40 acres today.  The burn was stopped due to poor ventilation (not enough air movement to move smoke out of the area efficiently) and plans are currently to continue tomorrow. Smoke will remain very visible and potentially will drop into low areas over night due to temperature inversion. If there are any questions or concerns, call the Sandia Ranger District at 281-3304.

Please go to the EMIFPA Facebook page for pictures (as of 3 am) of this burn. The Facebook link is below or here: https://www.facebook.com/East-Mountain-Interagency-Fire-Protection-Association-EMIFPA-328452040510310/

The Sandia District crews are conducting this burn. DO NOT call 911 to report this, the crews will monitor the area overnight.
