Dear Members and Friends,
Spring has finally arrived in the beautiful East Mountains, and the East Mountain Chamber of Commerce is in full bloom, planning great things for our Members and Friends of the community.
SAVE THE DATE!
The East Mountain Chamber of Commerce will present the first ever Taste of the East Mountains on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017 between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. It will be a public event held at Legacy Church in Edgewood. We will be inviting the general public to come taste and vote for the best tasting food. Member Food Vendors can participate for free, and other Members will have the option of setting up a table to display their products or services for free. This is your chance to get out, have some fun, meet your neighbors and fellow business owners, strengthen your business presence, and sample some of the greatest food available. There will be a bake-off as well, open to the general public, so if you have a secret dessert recipe, this will be the time to show it off!
Besides using regular word of mouth networking and media ads, we will be using the Internet and Social Media to promote the event. Come to our First Thursday Luncheon to find out how you can promote your Business at Taste of the East Mountains and anywhere using an Online Presence and/or Social Media!
Technology Expert Nancy Carpenter of Automated Systems, Inc. and Social Media Expert Bobbi Chavez of Social B will be introducing a series of hands-on tutorials and classes to show you how to make the most of the Internet and Social Media. Whether you're new to the world of technology or a super-techie, there is much to learn in order to have a significant working online presence with so much competition out there.
We look forward to showing you how to utilize Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linked in, and our East Mountain Chamber of Commerce website to your greatest advantage! We will be teaching why you need an online presence, how to know with certainty if your online presence is “working” or not, and how to intelligently know where your online presence is “broken” so you don’t waste time and money doing the wrong things to fix it.
There will be more information available at the First Thursday Luncheon Meeting on 4/06/17 at Los Vecinos Community Center. Please join us! Food will be provided by valued member The Greenside Cafe. Remember to RSVP at info@EastMountainChamber.com and tell Gail if you have any special food needs.
Until Thursday, have a wonderful week, get out and enjoy the early spring here in the East Mountains!
Nancy Carpenter, President
East Mountain Chamber of Commerce
Letter from the President
Dear Friends and Members,
As we await the coming of Spring, we look forward to our March First Thursday Monthly Lunch Meeting on 3/2/17. This meeting will be held at the beautiful Edgewood Campus of The Legacy Church, and will begin at 11:30 a.m. Food will be provided by the East Mountain Grill. RSVP by email to email@example.com or by phone to 505-281-1999 to reserve your seat. Admission is $10 per person at the door, which includes your lunch.
Please bring a guest or two, and a supply of business cards for networking. As well, we are always happy to collect brochures or other materials to include in our New Member Packets and Relocation Packets to help promote your business. We are nearly finished with the Packets, and look forward to spreading the word to see that our Member Businesses are recognized throughout the East Mountain Communities. We want to thank Members Jan McNelis of The UPS Store for putting them together this year and One Stop Office for doing so last year.
Our New Member Speaker will be Richard Patnaud, MA, LPCC, of Eastern Slope Counseling and Consulting. We are also proud to present Special Guest Speaker Ted Reiff of the Reuse People, who will be discussing the benefits of building materials salvage, historic preservation and adaptive reuse though the process known as deconstruction.
Additionally, we would like to commend our valued Member MAGS Indoor Shooting Range for their generous donation to the Moriarty Police Department. The owner of MAGS, David Tixier, along with his wife, Marcy, honored the Department at MAGS by donating $2,000 worth of ammunition on Friday, 2/17/17. Police Chief Bobby Garcia graciously accepted the donation. He spoke of how Moriarty police officers are members of MAGS, and how they are able to maintain their expertise in shooting handguns by training and practicing their skills at MAGS. Present at the ceremony, in addition to the Tixiers and Chief Garcia, were employees Mike Nelson, Manager, and "Chief" Mike Cruz, Assistant Manager, along with Rick Kennedy, who is the gunsmith at MAGS.
Remember to volunteer a bit of time to be involved in a Committee or two, such as Membership, Social Media, and Events. This is a way to put our heads together, make your suggestions known, and create the perfect environment to promote the great things that are happening here thanks to our community residents and businesses.
ANNOUNCEMENT!!! Please read below.
We don't want anyone to be left out so tell everyone.
The East Mountain Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce a series of educational in person and online workshops coming your way the next few months. According to a recent article in Entrepreneur Magazine, the internet is the first place consumers of all ages go to find information about businesses. Many people search the internet and social media sites to find or research products and services before they order online or physically go to a store front. Your business does not exist to millions of potential clients if you do not have an online presence.
We will be teaching Members why they need an online presence, how to know with certainty if your website is "working" or not, and how to intelligently know where your website is "broken" so you don't waste time and money doing the wrong things to fix it. We will also be teaching Members how to use Social Media to communicate, collaborate, generate leads, grow their brand, and increase their sales. This training alone is worth your membership fees.
We will be putting training videos and materials in a private forum on our East Mountain Chamber website for your convenience to review as many times as you like so please respond to this email to make sure you have an East Mountain Chamber website account to log into. Usually the username log in is the email you registered with. If you want training for multiple employees from your business, please respond to this email with each employee's email and name.
After we get our membership educated, we will be holding Online Scavenger Hunts to get members in our community and beyond to learn about our member products and services so don't miss out on this opportunity to learn how to use technology to do more with less. We want all our member businesses to succeed.
Technology has changed the way many of us do business and that trend is only going to increase over the next few years. More details to come. Stay involved, stay connected, and we look forward to seeing you all soon!
Automated Systems, Inc.
We are looking forward to a great turnout at our upcoming February Luncheon Meeting on 2/2/17 at 11:30, which will be held in Moriarty at Mags Indoor Shooting Range. David Tixier, owner of Mags and a Member of our Board of Directors, will be speaking. A tour of the facility will be available as well, and we thank all at Mags for hosting us.
We will also have a presentation by guest speaker Jalayne Wineland of Staffing Solutions to discuss how to find temporary and temp to hire employees, as well as other vital information regarding the job market.
Lunch will be provided by our newest Member, Pizza 9 in Moriarty. We wish to welcome them to the East Mountain Chamber of Commerce family. Remember to contact Gail at 281-1999 for if you have any food restrictions.
As of the first of the year, we have concentrated not only on growing our Membership, but on forming Committees to help facilitate community outreach, including event planning and a social media presence.
We have always stressed the importance of your participation as a Member of the East Mountain Chamber of Commerce. We all have busy lives, especially as business owners, but an investment of as little as an hour or two per month makes a huge difference, and will provide a great return in opportunities to brainstorm, network, and give each of our members a greater foothold in the East Mountains. Please contact Gail, our Executive Director, to get involved. We will be reaching out individually as well to request your input.
Below is a checklist of education, networking, promotions, referrals and event opportunities that the East Mountain Chamber provides to its membership. You are not maximizing your membership if you are not participating in all opportunities. Together we can do more than individually.
As always, we look forward to seeing you all on our First Thursday lunch meetings, and to working with you to make a difference for your business, the economic climate throughout the East Mountains, and to achieve our mutual goals of enjoying a cohesive, prosperous and exciting place to live, work and play.
As another year draws to a close, we are excited to welcome 2017 with bright visions for a fabulous new year. In addition to introducing our new Board Members, we will be varying the venue for our monthly luncheon meetings once per quarter to add convenience for our Members in all the Communities throughout the East Mountains which includes Moriarty, Edgewood, and Tijeras. Thank you MAGS Indoor Shooting Range and Legacy Church Edgewood who volunteered to open their doors to our Membership for this purpose.
We are planning some great networking events throughout the coming year, and will keep you up to date as plans solidify, including some joint efforts with the Edgewood Chamber of Commerce. We have been maintaining a dialogue with the Edgewood Chamber of Commerce in order to facilitate such events. We look forward to announcing further details for a joint event in February focused on Jobs. There will be staffing experts on hand to discuss many great options to get help and offer employment to those in our Communities and surrounding areas. We also have a high school mentorship program to help our business members and to grow the youth in our communities.
As always, we are here to serve you, our Members, and we always welcome your suggestions, feedback, thoughts and participation! We are listening! We strongly encourage you to invest an hour per month to serve on at least one Committee in the name of teamwork, to help us help YOU and your business! This is your Chamber, and with the same vision and goals in mind, we can accomplish grand things going forward.
We have the following committees that need to be filled. Please respond to this email or call at 281-1999 if you would like to join any of the following committees to help run and influence your Chamber. We will then email everyone who is on the committees along with everyone’s contact information so you can start meeting.
Please enjoy the pics we took just before Christmas, when we presented the wonderful staff of Los Vecinos Community Center with a holiday gift basket of goodies, beautifully put together for us by member business Triangle Grocery in Cedar Crest. These wonderful young men and women are always anxious to help with a smile, and they contribute so much to our luncheon meetings and other Community events.
For our luncheon tomorrow on Thursday, 1/05/17, member businesses Jim Stundon of Hug a Horse and Walkin' n' Circles Ranch and Genevieve Barrett of Talking Talons will be speaking about their organizations and how they benefit our communities. Luncheon of pizza and salad will be provided by another one of our members Trail Rider Pizza. Please call us at 281-1999 if we need to make special food arrangements for you.

East Mountain Chamber
December 2016 Board Meeting
Minutes by Tamne Robinson, Secretary
Meeting Called to Order at 1305 hours By Nancy Carpenter, Thursday, 1 December, 2016 at Los Vecinos Community Center.
James Reader President of Edgewood Chamber of Commerce and Linda Burke, Administrator of the Edgewood Chamber of Commerce attended Board meeting to discuss the possibility of the Chambers uniting to form a single Chamber in the East Mountains and Estancia valley.
They suggested a “Tri-County” Chamber as an umbrella organization with chapters in Moriarty, Edgewood and Tijeras/Cedar Crest.
Other suggestions were: To have council meetings where the two boards would come together to work together on different events.
It was decided that the president and Administrator of the East Mountain Chamber would attend the Edgewood board meeting to introduce themselves and the EMCC to the Edgewood board and discuss their thoughts on combining.
Ultimately - both boards would like to come up with lists of pros and cons about combining and then have a combined board meeting to discuss these pros and cons and to decide if combining would be beneficial – if so to begin a plan of action on combining chambers.
Bob Jones suggested that the decision should go to the memberships and they should have the final say in consolidating. The plan would be to being the list of pros and cons to the combined board meeting. Then to come up with suggestions on combining Chambers and then to present to each memberships the pros and cons list and the suggested plans of actions for each membership to decide on.
Edgewood Board meeting will be either the 12th or the 13th of December at 6:00pm Edgewood is having a Winter Chamber Mixer December 15th, 2016 5-7pm at the Church Street Market. Free event but they would like RSVPs.
EMCC Board Meeting: It was suggested that the EMCC Chamber needs to help Nancy with an Open House in order to help save her business. EMCC will have to have another board meeting as the board ran out of time to address the following items: The EMCC Winter networking Chamber event in January. May is Teacher Appreciation month – should have an event then to appreciate teachers.
Final item on agenda was Gail wanted approval to purchase a Holiday fruit gift basket for the Los Vecinos staff for taking care of the Chamber as well as they do. The approved the purchase.
Meeting adjourned at 14:05 hours by Nancy Carpenter , President
Minutes respectfully submitted by Tamne Robinson, Secretary
12/16 Letter from the President
We hope you all had a glorious Thanksgiving, and would like to be among the first to wish you a happy, healthy, prosperous Holiday Season and upcoming New Year! We are looking forward to ringing in the month of December at our luncheon meeting scheduled for Thursday, 12/1/16 at the Los Vecinos Community Center at 11:30 a.m.
Please don't forget to RSVP and let us know any special dietary needs at least 24 hours in advance. Food will be provided by new East Mountain Chamber of Commerce member Chili Hills in Edgewood (with a second location in Moriarty), and promises to be a bountiful feast!
We are happy to announce that our Guest Speaker will be Peter Mikelson of SCORE Albuquerque, who will introduce the invaluable services and workshops provided by this great group of volunteer coaches and mentors, who are so gracious in offering their experience, wisdom and input to assist in the success of your business.
We will also be welcoming and announcing the following 2017 Board of Directors:
Nancy Carpenter of Automated Systems, Inc. - President
Mary Dammann of Hard Water Solutions Plus - Vice President
Bob Jones of Sandia Mountain Lions Club - Treasurer
Barbara Johnstad of Burger Boy - Secretary
Tim Carter of Legacy Church Edgewood - Member at Large
David Tixier of Mags Indoor Shooting - Member at Large
Elizabeth Elizabeth Morantes of Bank of the West - Member at Large
Bob Brittain of Creative Award Concepts - Ex Officio Member at Large
The coming year promises to be filled with excitement, renewed energy and terrific opportunities. We plan to start rotating our first Thursday of the month luncheon meetings between Cedar Crest, Edgewood, and Moriarty respectively in the hopes that other members will be able to attend and participate. We will have the new schedule of meetings and events in the January 2017 newsletter.
Tamne Robinson of One Stop Office has decided to step down so that we could invite Tim Carter of Legacy Church Edgewood to be on the board since Legacy Church Edgewood will be hosting our Edgewood meeting place. Additionally, Sarah Egdell of Sandia Park Self Storage has decided to retire and moved out of state so we invited Barbara Johnstad of Burger Boy to join the 2017 Board. We did not need to vote again since our By Laws, Section 4, states that "the Board of Directors shall nominate a member of the Chamber to fill the unexpired term of the office in which the vacancy exists".
We would like to start the formation and scheduling of committees (remember, one hour per month of your time has the potential to provide exponential returns) and continuing to grow our family of Members throughout the East Mountain Communities. We strongly encourage and appreciate your participation. You are always invited to reach out with your suggestions, thoughts and ideas to help us all grow, prosper, have fun and move forward toward our mutual goals.
